Provocative Discography

A discogram is a diagnostic test utilized to view the internal structure of an intervertebral disc and determine whether it is the source of pain. The procedure is done via live x-ray using small needles which are guided into the respective discs. A radiocontrast dye is injected into the disc under live imaging. Once the discs are injected, a CT scan is performed after the procedure to evaluate the detailed anatomy of the disc.

The procedure has two purposes, to determine which disc(s) are painful and to evaluate the exact internal structure of the disc to determine the exact location of the anatomical problem. Based on the outcomes of the test, further options can then be explored for treatment.
